Kaduna renovates 457 schools under emergency ‘intervention’

 The Kaduna state Commissioner for education, science and technology, Professor Andrew Nok has said the state government awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 457 primary and secondary schools under emergency intervention from 2016 to date.

He said this at the distribution of 250 chairs to Government Girls Secondary School, Tudun Nupawa in Kaduna on Monday.

According to him, 360 out of the 457 schools have been completely renovated while others are at various stages of completion. The effort he said was aimed at improving learning environment so as to achieve a better output.

“We are also committed to improving the quality of teaching and learning in public schools to enable us compete favorably with the private schools,” he said.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Adamu Mansur disclosed that so far, over 90,000 chairs have been distributed to public schools across the state; saying the government had awarded contract for supply of 256,182 units of chairs.

“Out of the figures, 167,982 chairs are meant for primary schools while the remaining 18,200 are for secondary schools. When this administration took over the governance of Kaduna state, public schools were in a dilapidated state and students were sitting on bare floor and windows while laboratories were also without equipment. In an effort to address the problem, the state government embarked on renovation, in some cases re-construction and equipping of the schools with the necessary facilities,” he lamented.

He however assured that distribution of chairs will continue until all public schools are fully equipped to provide quality teaching to the students.
