Zaria Water Project To Be Completed In July 2017 (By: channelstv.com)

The Kaduna State government has promised that the persistent water scarcity being experienced by residents would come to an end soon, as the Zaria water project would be ready by July, 2017.

The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Sulieman Lere, made the promise during a visit to the project site to ascertain the level of work there.

The Commissioner said that the project was awarded to two construction firms and it includes rehabilitation and replacement of some of the old pipes, construction of 7.3 kilometre transmission lines, construction of 10 reservoirs of six million litres each, construction of three bolster stations and dams, among other projects.
According to the Commissioner, the project is intended to alleviate and address the issue of perennial shortage of water for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes within the area.
The Zaria water project started in 1999, and the sum of 69 billion Naira would be needed for its completion. Out of this figure, the water treatment plant would cost 24 billion naira and another 20 billion naira would be spent on expansion before transmission.
Meanwhile, one of the contractors handling the water expansion project, lamented that some residents have built on water and transmission lines and this has affected proper reticulation of water in some areas.
He said that this has been a major issue delaying the speedy completion of the project and called for a reorientation of the people.
Some residents of Zaria who lamented their sufferings due to the water scarcity, expressed optimism that the project when completed would indeed impact positively on their lives.
